Yahoo!'s Web Celeb David Letterman

On August 30, 1993, the LATE SHOW with David Letterman made its debut, and it quickly went on to become one of the most talked-about and critically acclaimed programs of the year. One year later, Time magazine named Letterman the heir to Johnny Carson's late-night crown. Nearly three years later, TV Guide's "Best of '95" edition praised Letterman as "still the funniest man on TV in the hippest show on at night," and cited LATE SHOW as one of The Ten Shows that Clicked of the hundreds of television programs on the air. Letterman, who is beginning his 15th year on late-night network television, has earned the honor by consistently delivering inventive and imaginatively inspired comedy.

His first network break was in 1978 on the CBS variety series Mary, starring Mary Tyler Moore. In November of that year, he made the first of his 22 appearances on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. He also guest- hosted Tonight numerous times. In 1980, Letterman began hosting a morning comedy-variety program, The David Letterman Show, which ran for three months on NBC and earned Letterman two Emmy Awards. His Late Night with David Letterman premiered in February 1982.

Throughout its 11 1/2 years, Late Night was critically acclaimed and won many awards, including five Emmys, and was nominated for scores more. In 1992, Letterman was honored with a George Foster Peabody Award for taking "one of TV's most conventional and least inventive forms - the talk show - and infusing it with freshness and imagination." The "Late Show" has won an Emmy Award as Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Program and has been nominated for seven additional Emmys, a record- breaking number for a late-night talk show and for any late-night program in its premiere year.

In addition, Letterman won a Foundation Award from the International Radio and Television Society and was named Funniest Lead Performer in Series Television at the Eight Annual American Comedy Awards.

In November of 1996, America Online and Late Show with David Letterman launched Late Show Online, an exclusive interactive site offering AOL members the chance to participate in the unique, spirited brand of comedy that has made the show a hit.

The Late Show Online site is exclusive to AOL and is the only area where members can participate in behind-the-scenes action and interact with backstage personalities. The AOL site offers members ever-changing humor, games and contests, live entertainment, Dave's original Comedy Reviews, audio and video clips from the show, daily prize giveaways, downloadable selections from Dave's Record Collection, backstage photos, and numerous opportunities to design, suggest, and execute trademark Late Show comedy, not to mention the ever-popular El Chat Room and Los Message Boards.

"We are working on a couple ideas that'll make that 'Max Headroom' thing look like a puppet show," says Dave.
