Yahoo!'s Web Celeb Chris Rock

Chris Rock was raised in the Bedford- Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York. His two idols were: boxer Sugar Ray Leonard and comedian /"Saturday Night Live" alumnus, Eddie Murphy. He realized which career he was heading for early in life. Says Rock "I can't fight, so..."

Chris Rock has been pegged by the national media as the new Eddie Murphy, the new Richard Pryor--even the new Lenny Bruce. He is one of the smartest, funniest, and most widely appealing comedians ever to make it from being a comedy club opening act to a household name. Rock has been performing stand-up comedy for more than twelve years. He performs in concert for sold-out crowds. He still lives in Brooklyn.

Chris Rock was discovered by Eddie Murphy at New York's Comedy Strip when he was 18 years old. "Beverly Hills Cop" with Eddie Murphy was Rock's film debut. In 1993 he wrote, created, starred in and produced the rap comedy "CB4" for Universal Pictures; which was a satire spoofing the world of hard-core rap, and opened #1 at the box-office.

Rock served as the sole presidential campaign correspondent for Comedy Central's acclaimed "Politically Incorrect," in 1996 logging humorous and sometimes sardonic reports from the trail of the primaries, to both the Democratic and Republican Conventions, through to election night eve. This provided a forum for Rock to convey his observations and insight in what shaped up to be a memorable election year indeed.

1997 is a very busy year for Chris Rock. He has been on the road touring to support his new CD, "Roll With The New," shooting commercials, working in the recording studio, shooting a music video.

His HBO special, "Bring The Pain," taped in Washington, DC in May of 1996 tapped into societal issues such as race, the African-American community's divided response to O.J. Simpson and seemed to strike a chord with anyone who saw the tour-de-force special. For "Bring On The Pain" he received two Emmy Awards in the categories: Outstanding Variety, Music or Comedy Special and Outstanding Writing for a Variety or Music Program. Rock also picked up a third nomination when he received a shared credit for writing on "Politically Incorrect," also in the category of Outstanding Writing for a Variety or Music Program.

All of this incredible success is swiftly being followed with publication this month of Chris' new book ROCK THIS!, published by Hyperion. This is Rock's first-ever humor book, promising to break the mold of humor books today. Rock's book is controversial, thought- provoking, and laugh-out-loud hilarious, drawing on his own life experiences, his new marriage, the political scene, thoughts on being black in today's America, and much more. With "an appeal that crosses racial boundaries" (Entertainment Weekly), Chris Rock, "crawls into the minds of the lazy, women, blacks, and whites, uncovering driving forces that are all too real in modern society" (Variety).
